The protein encoded by this gene is a transmembrane glycoprotein that is a member of the protein kinase superfamily. This protein is a receptor for members of the epidermal growth factor family. EGFR is a cell surface protein that binds to epidermal growth factor, thus inducing receptor dimerization and tyrosine autophosphorylation leading to cell proliferation. Mutations in this gene are associated with lung cancer. EGFR is a component of the cytokine storm which contributes to a severe form of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) resulting from infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). Figure 1. A) Four membrane proteins were knocked out in K562 cells using XDel technology, following EditCo Bio’s proprietary workflow. Protein levels were assessed via flow cytometry at four time points: days 3, 7, 14, and 21 post-transfection, and compared to negative controls (non-edited cells or cells electroporated with Cas9 only). Membrane protein depletion remained stable over time, and cell viability was consistently high (>90%) across all samples. B) Representative flow cytometry plots showing protein levels for CD46 and CD59 in XDel knockout pools at 21 days post-editing.
